Joy's Camp

Shaba National Reserve Kenya
  • Joy's Camp

Joy's Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson's tented home in Shaba National Reserve. The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book. The 10 chic canvas bedrooms have breath-taking views of the surrounding hills. The camp overlooks a large natural spring where elephant and lion jostle for watering rights with herds of buffalo and the rare desert species of Beisa Oryx, reticulated giraffe and Grevy's zebra. This camp is lucky enough to be surrounded by some beautiful landscape features, including the rocky gorge of Ewaso Nyiro River, a number of springs, chilly crystal waterfall at Sharinki Falls and volcanic peaks. Shaba is a birdwatchers paradise with hundreds of species seen from the comfort of the camp.

Joy's Camp is the perfect choice for discerning guests interested in a glimpse of Kenyan history, as well as those looking for an authentic wildlife experience, combined with the comfort of a luxury-tented camp.

    Joy's Camp

    In our opinion

Game Viewing - It is the only camp operating in Shaba National Reserve, which is [art of the Samburu eco-system, so guests have the whole reserve to themselves. Joy's Camp also has access to the unique Nakuprat Gotu Wildlife Concervancy bordering Samburu. Shaba is the private and up-market part of Samburu Reserve.

History - The very site where Joy Adamson lived with her animals and re-introduced Penny the leopard to the wild and wrote her last book, "Queen of Shaba". The camp incorporates a small museum of Joy Adamson memorabilia, kindly loaned by the "Elsa Trust".

Highly qualified guides - All of Joy's Camp guides have the Silver Level KPSGA qualification.

Unrivalled game drive vehicles - Joy's Camp has a brand new fleet of spacious open-sided Land Cruisers. All vehicles feature enhancements specifically designed for comfort and photography, such as charging sockets and camera stands.
